Dana Gillespie
The Sound Lounge, SM1 1NU , [Venue Details]Dana Gillespie blew us all away at Folk In The Park and her debut at the Sutton Sound Lounge. This time she's back and with her supergroup of a band: Dino Baptiste on piano, Harry Whitty on Bass, BamBam Watts on drums and Dom Stockbridge on guitar!
Dana Gillespie, a quintessential artist with an adventurous and creative spirit, has lived a life full of musical and theatrical exploits. Born in 1949 and raised in London during the blues revival, Dana began her recording career at 16 with Pye Records. By 1968, she was signed to Decca, releasing albums like "Box Of Surprises," entirely self-written. She starred in major musicals like "Catch My Soul" and "Jesus Christ Superstar," and collaborated with icons like David Bowie and Elton John in various capacities.
Her third album, "Weren’t Born A Man," produced by Bowie and others, was released in 1973, showcasing her exceptional songwriting and singing. Despite setbacks with her management company MainMan, Dana remained resilient, pursuing acting alongside her music, with notable appearances in films throughout the 70s and 80s.
Returning to music, she released "Blue Job" in 1982, venturing into blues and founding the Mustique Blues Festival. Her extensive discography spans blues, pop, and devotional music, with a notable collaboration with Bob Dylan in 1997.
